Capsized boat off Florida coast

by Antonia Mazzilli

For many many years, Cuban migrants have crossed the sea in flimsy boats to try to escape the poor living conditions and political views in Cuba. Many have been lost at sea and Cuba is about ninety miles south of Florida. It has been estimated that 16,000 to 100,000 have died whilst fleeing from Cuba.

Recently a capsized boat has been discovered off the coast of Florida and one survivor has been found. There were around thirty-nine people on the boat at the time and since then five bodies have been discovered. At this time thirty-four people still remain missing.

The coast guard that was on duty at that time had already intercepted around a hundred others over his career.

Unfortunately, many people don’t know about the fact that Cuban, Haitian, and Dominican people try to flee from their place of residence. There are many different reasons why people try to leave and think that it is worth the risk.
