Local Mask Mandate?

by Tobi Nardin

As we all know, the world was hit with a shocking pandemic that affected lives around the world.

This changed the way schools have been functioning, including Harwood. Since that time, Harwood split students to reduce exposure, and also required masks. At this time, many believe that masks are important.

“I believe that masks are a necessary part of the safety of students and staff,” said Nicky Service, a Harwood eighth grader.

Although the majority of the Harwood community would agree with that, there are also complaints about the mask mandate. They believe it to be unnecessary as the majority of students and staff are vaccinated. These opposing views have sparked debate in the Harwood body.

Here is what HUMS Principal, Duane Pierson has to say about this topic. “Personally, I wish we didn’t have to wear masks. But, the masks offer a level of protection that is essential right now.”

The new COVID-19 variant has been proved to be more deadly than any other variant, thus creating uncertainty of when this pandemic will finally end. In response to when he thinks the restrictions will be lifted, Mr. Pierson said “I don’t know. The delta variant was occurring and now with Omicron, not any time soon.”

This is disappointing for everyone to hear, as with all the mandates learning has become a real struggle for students everywhere. All that we as a community can do now is stay safe by getting the booster, wearing masks, and social distancing. After we all have done those, there is a slight hope that we can go to school like normal again!
