Set during the punk rock movement of the 1970’s in London, “Cruella” is a 2021 American drama-comedy film, giving us the backstory of the notoriously fashionable Disney villain, Cruella de Vil from “One Hundred and One Dalmatians”.
Starring award-winning actress Emma Stone as Cruella, this movie is chock-full of entertaining drama, gorgeous costumes, and toe-tapping music.
After three years in the making, and two hundred million dollars spent, “Cruella” came out in theaters and on Disney+ in May, 2021. Many viewers loved the film, and it won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Movie.
This is not surprising, considering the quality of this film. First of all, the fashion in this movie is outstanding. Cruella alone wears forty seven different costumes, inspired by the ‘70’s punk style. From unique ‘70’s streetwear, to motorcycle attire, to stunning dresses, this film’s costumes were for sure a crowd pleaser.
Also, “Cruella” has a noteworthy soundtrack, with many songs, especially from British artists of the '60s and '70s. Songs by David Bowie, The Clash, Queen, Florence + the Machine, Blondie, Tina Turner, and many others, do great work in representing the movie's era, setting, and mood.
After watching “Cruella”, you’ll want to up your fashion game, act a bit more clever and revengeful, turn up some music, and punk rock on!
